4. Yes, these parents are plainly bonkers. But there are worse things for parents to be than bonkers, and I tend to feel that a five-year-old who gets taken up Scafell Pike probably has brighter prospects in life than one who never gets to walk further than the distance between the front door and the SUV.

“embarrassed but very grateful” looks as a correct state of mind for the parents. While it may have been educational for an older boy, I doubt that the five-year-old will remember much more than being cold, exhausted and frightened.
